Because of certain federal identity theft laws, the use of an alias can be illegal. For the most part; nobody would be able to pin a charge on offenders for using nicknames. However, there have been cases where people have been taken to court for using a fake name on the internet. This is mostly because there is a law where filling out a form with a fake name is fraudulent. Therefore; using a fraudulent name while applying to any sort of online forms with the intent of hiding your identity is illegal.
